Pittsburgh Newborn Portraits: Empowering Moms
My dear friend let me know she was expecting and for the months that followed, my mind kept visualizing how I’d photograph her baby boy. She’s an artist, so I’m sure she knows what I’m talking about and how when I show up, open to capturing all of the sweet moments that unfold, that I still have some ideas in the back of my mind, influencing the way I photograph the session. Most of all, I wanted to celebrate my friend, as someone I’ve gone to for advice, trusted for guidance, and benefited from her encouragement. And I’m just one of many, many mamas who have been blessed by her wisdom as she is also an advocate for new moms with Empowering Moms, a non-profit that grew out of years of partnering with a pediatric practice and is now formally established as a non-profit.
We started in their bedroom, which was a great place for the whole family to gather. Lots of lovely window light!
And then we moved outside to the edge of their wooded backyard, a place that has become a standard location in their collection of family portraits.
This basket and fishing net are a bit of a departure from my newborn portfolio, but I couldn’t love these images more. The net is dad’s and he is a fisherman and author who writes about fish and fishing. With a lifestyle approach to my sessions, I tend not to pose babies or use props, and when I saw the net, I had my doubts about how the baby would feel about it, but this little dreamboat slept right through it! And the basket is mine. I do like a basket every now and then and thought this leaf-shaped basket would be perfect for this family.
If you’re expecting or adopting or already have your baby (wink, wink all you mamas coming out of quarantine), I’d love to hear from you!
